This page covers the north end of the East Mesa: the part of Las Cruces above US 70 that the MLS calls Jornada, together with Metro Verde, the master-planned community that has grown up inside it. The name comes from the Jornada del Muerto, the desert basin that opens to the north.
Metro Verde is where most of the building in Las Cruces is happening. It is laid out around Red Hawk Golf Club, with parks and walking paths between its sections, and it is reached by Sonoma Ranch Boulevard and Peachtree Hills Road. Its sections carry their own names, among them Metro Verde South, Arcadia, Metro Central, Metro Park Village and the Trails at Metro. Homes are mostly single-story, on city lots of about an eighth of an acre, and a large share of what is for sale at any time is new or under construction.
The larger homes are in Red Hawk Estates, beside the golf course, where custom homes sit on bigger lots and look across the fairways to the Organ Mountains. This is where most of the area’s homes above $500,000 are found.
Outside Metro Verde, the Jornada area includes established subdivisions such as Sierra Norte and Tayvis Estates, and older homes from the 1960s onward.
The Organ Mountains fill the view to the southeast and the Doña Ana Mountains stand close by to the north. US 70 is the route into town and over the pass to White Sands.
