Moving to Las Cruces

Updated October 6, 2026

Las Cruces sits in the Mesilla Valley of southern New Mexico, where Interstate 10 and Interstate 25 meet. The Rio Grande runs along the west side of the city and the Organ Mountains stand along the east. El Paso, Texas, with the nearest major airport, is about 45 miles south.

The setting

This is high desert, at close to 4,000 feet. Summers are hot and dry, winters are mild and sunny, and the sky is clear most days of the year. The Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument begins at the edge of town, and White Sands National Park is under an hour to the northeast.

What the city is built around

New Mexico State University is here, and so is a large medical community. White Sands Missile Range and NASA lie over the mountains to the east. The valley floor is farmed, with pecans and chile the best known crops.

Where people live

The valley and the old town of Mesilla are green, irrigated and historic. The East Mesa, including Sonoma Ranch, is newer and looks straight at the mountains. Picacho Hills rises on the west side of the river. The foothills to the southeast, around Soledad Canyon and Las Alturas, offer acreage and distance from neighbors.

Before you visit

Decide which of those settings you are drawn to, because they feel quite different from one another. Then look at what is for sale in each. Every page on this site shows the homes on the market today, and we are glad to arrange showings for the ones you want to see.
